Colombo National Athletic Championships – Day 1

The First Day of the Colombo National Athletic Championship which was organized by the Colombo Athletic Club ended successfully today at the Torrington Grounds.

60 meters for under 9 boys/girls, Long jump, High jump, Shot- put, Javelin throw, Discuss Throw, 400 meters heats and 100 meters for different age limits are some of the events that took place today. The first day of CNAC started with the 60 meters for girls and boys. The specialty of this is that all the participants of this event will be awarded certificates if they pass the merit limit. By doing this, the organizers hope to encourage the upcoming athletes at a young age.

The event will conclude tomorrow. About 100 schools participated in this event, primarily from the Colombo district with an expected turn out of more than 3000 students in total over the course of the two days.

The President of the CAC Mr. Danushka Devarajan said to ThePapare.com that “The primary aim of the meet is to encourage the youth of Sri Lanka to take up athletics as a sport and to help talented individuals to achieve their highest protential”

The winners of CNAC will be selected according to their age groups. Participants under the age groups 9, 11 and 13 will be judged based on qualifying standards and awarded a merit certificate if they qualify, while participants in the under 15 and 17 categories will be awarded 1st,2nd and 3rd place awards. Championship trophies will be awarded to boys and girls in the under 15 and 17 age groups, according to their individual achievements, while participating schools will receive an achiever’s plaque based on their points for the age groups under 15 and 17.

The secretary of CAC Mr. Chaminda Fonseka also mentioned to ThePapare.com that “We will select four of the best athletes from this championship and they will be awarded scholarships”
